Stefanie Kunkel

Researcher at the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, Germany; research group "Digitalization and Sustainability Transformations"

Dr. Stefanie Kunkel completed her doctorate at the University of Potsdam on the expected and observed effects of digitalisation in industry on environmental sustainability. She previously worked and did research at the United Nations Environment Programme in Geneva, the Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford and the National Taiwan University in Taipei. In her current position at the RIFS Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, Stefanie’s research focuses on the implications of digitalisation in globalised industrial production processes, e.g., the role of digital technologies in monitoring energy consumption along the supply chain. She also works on the question of how artificial intelligence can be designed to optimise its environmental effects, e.g., managing its risks and benefits for climate protection. She uses empirical social research methods such as interviews, document analyses and statistical analyses.
